What are Major Symptoms of Alport Syndrome

2013-03-04 10:22

What are Major Symptoms of Alport SyndromeAlport Syndrome is a form of inherited disease involving a mutation that affects a person's ears, eyes and kidneys. It is estimated to affect at least 1 in 5, 000 people. This disorder is caused due to genetic mutations that effect the type IV collagen family of proteins. Type IV collagen is a major part of important tissue structures named 'basement membranes' (BM) which are present in all tissues including the kidney, inner ear, and eye. In general, the disease affects boys more than girls. In the following text, we will introduce the major symptoms of Alport Syndrome.

Commonly, people with Alport Syndrome will not experience any symptoms at first. What follows is the progressive destruction of the person's glomeruli, thus resulting in blood in the urine and the decline of the kidneys' filtering ability. Generally, the person experiences a progressive loss of renal function, as well as an accumulation of waste products and fluids in their body.

Women with Alport Syndrome experience symptoms that are usually milder or no symptoms at all. For men, the symptoms are generally more serious and worsen at a quicker rate. The major symptoms of Alport Syndrome include as below:

▪ Cough

▪ Edema, or swelling, overall

▪ Hematuria (blood in urine)

▪ Abnormal color of the urine

▪ Swelling of the ankle, feet, and leg

▪ Loss of hearing, more common in men

▪ Decrease or loss of vision, more common in men

Individuals with Alport Syndrome can progress to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) at an early age, between adolescence and the age of 40. Symptoms of either heart failure or Kidney Failure can occur or develop in person with this disease.

At present, there is not yet a cure for it, but an early and effective treatment can help slow down or even prevent the development of Kidney Failure. Refer to 'Natural Treatment for Alport Syndrome' for more detailed information.
