2012-10-24 16:55

Alport syndrome is a group of inherited disorder, which mainly involves kidneys, eyes and ears. Children with the disease mainly present with the following symptoms.

Hematuria

Children with alport syndrome may initially present with only persistent hematuria. It is due to the inflammation in kidneys impairing the filtering units. As a result, red blood cells leak into urine through the filtering units. Hematuria can exists alone for a long time before other signs appear.

Hearing loss

Hearing loss is another symptom of children alport syndrome. It never occurs at birth, but it becomes overt by late childhood or early adolescence. It usually occurs before renal failure develops. Some children will not affected by hearing problem at all. It is estimated that more than 80% of boys with X-linked alport syndrome will develop hearing loss. Girls with the condition is usually not affected by hearing loss and the risk increases with age.

Ocular defect

Various ocular defects can seen in patients with alport syndrome, but are not common in children. Ocular defects include anterior lenticonus, perimacular flecks and corneal ulceration. Anterior lenticonus can be seen in 15%~20% cases of patients with X-linked and autosomal recessive alport syndrome. In serious case, this condition can lead to cataract formation and even vision loss.

The above are the main symptoms of children alport syndrome. As the disease is genetic, there is no cure for the disease. However, if the children can take effective treatment as early as possible, they will be able to help the patients avoid developing renal failure.
