Can Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Use Ibuprofen

I have chronic kidney disease, and recently I am suffering from fever. Can I use ibuprofen?

Just like aspirin, ibuprofen is one common medication to fight against inflammation, kill pain and treat high fever. However, if people have Chronic Kidney Disease, they may need to stay away from ibuprofen for two reasons.

1. Long-term use of ibuprofen may cause irreversible kidney damage: Kidney damage due to long-term use of ibuprofen is called analgesic nephropathy. This condition can cause permanent kidney damage that can’t be repaired again.

2. Acute Kidney Failure: For people who have had chronic kidney disease, a signle dose of ibuprofen may cause acute kidney failure. Besides, elder adults and children are susceptible to suffer from kidney damage caused by ibuprofen.

From the above analysis, we can know people with chronic kidney disease had better not use ibuprofen to deal with their fever or inflammation. Medications that don’t have renal toxicity are suitable for them.
