Possible Complications after a Kidney TransplantA Kidney Transplant is a major operation. There are complications associated with most major operations that may occur with kidney transplant as well. There are 4 main complications which can occur following renal transplantation:

1. Infections

The anti-rejection drugs patients take put they at greater risk for developing an infection. The most common infections after a kidney transplant are of the lungs, the surgical incision, and the urinary tract or bladder.

To help prevent infections, people may take anti-bacterial, anti-virus, and anti-fungal medications for a certain period of time after the operation.

2. High blood pressure

This is a very common disorder which prone to become more frequent as people age. Some medicines can cause high blood pressure in people, other persons must take meds to control their high blood pressure. The doctor or transplant tea, will work with each person to find the one best for him.

3. Rejection

Rejection is when the human body's immune system recognizes something foreign in the body and tries to destroy it. It is the most common complication of a kidney transplant and can happen any time during the life of the kidney. Rejection comes in several forms:

▪ Hyperacute rejection - This is a very rare form of rejection which occurs when the body immediately destroys the transplanted kidney.

▪ Acute rejection - Usually happen in the first few months after transplant, but it can happen at any time after the surgery.

▪ Chronic rejection - Occurring months or even years after the transplant, this form of rejection causes the new kidney to slowly stop functioning.

4. Diabetes

Medications patients are taking after a transplant can cause Diabetes. They may need to start taking insulin or increase the dose of medicines to help control their blood sugar. Symptoms of diabetes may include: increased thirst, increased frequency of urination, blurred vision, and confusion.
