Diet in Glomerulonephritis in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2012-10-17 17:18

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. It mainly affects joints and also may involve kidneys. When kidneys are involved, it will cause inflammation in kidneys, thus resulting in glomerulonephritis. A heathy diet plays an important role in treating glomerulonephritis in rheumatoid arthritis.

Saturated fat can increase the inflammation in kidneys and other body parts. Thereby, the patients are recommended to limit the consumption of foods high in saturated fats such as animal products. As saturated fat can increase the production of inflammatory chemicals which can cause inflammation, pain, swelling and joint destruction.

Omega-3 fatty acid

Omega-3 fatty acid found in coldwater fish can lower blood pressure and triglyceride levels as well as suppress inflammation and decrease the risk of illness. These properties can help with glomerulonephritis in rheumatoid arthritis. Omega-fatty acid is mainly found in coldwater fish like salmon, tuna, sardines, trout, and mackerel. Additionally, omega-6 fatty acids may promote inflammatory and/or autoimmune disease. Therefore, the patients with glomerulonephritis in rheumatoid arthritis should limit the foods high in omega-6 fatty acid including corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, wheat germ oil and sesame oil.

As the filtering units in kidneys are inflamed, some proteins may leak into urine through it, thus resulting in proteinuria. It is a risk factor in deteriorating renal function. Therefore, if the patients with glomerulonephritis in rheumatoid arthritis develop proteinuria, they are recommended to limit the protein intake strictly.

Impaired kidneys fail to remove extra fluids from body. Therefore, the patients are very likely to develop edema. In serious case, their lung may be filled with fluids, leading to difficult breath and even heart failure. It is important for them to limit the fluid intake when they develop edema.

In early stages of glomerulonephritis in rheumatoid arthritis, the patients do not need to change the diet. When it develops into advanced stages, a proper diet is very important. It is necessary for the patients to make an individualized dietary plan based on their illness condition.
