Renal Function Tests fo Horseshoe Kidney

2012-10-01 17:12

Horseshoe kidney is a congenital abnormality of urinary tract system. Although the long term outcome of the disease is good, some repeated infections, kidney stones and urinary tract obstructions can affect renal function. Therefore, periodic renal function tests are important for the patients with horseshoe kidney.

In right condition, the kidneys can function to remove the wastes and extra fluids from body. However, in horseshoe kidney, if the kidney function decreases, some toxins and harmful substances will accumulate in the blood such as creatinine and urea. The following tests can measure the levels of these substances to show how well your kidneys are working.

Creatinine test

Creatinine is the end product of muscle and is filtered out of body by kidneys normally. However, decreased kidneys will fail to work adequately, resulting in dangerous levels of creatinine in blood. A blood creatinine test helps to estimate the glomerular filtration rate(GFR). The doctors can use GFR to regularly check how well your kidneys are working.

BUN test

Urea nitrogen is the product of proteins and is eliminated by kidneys normally. If BUN level rises, it shows that your kidneys are not working well. If so, you should reduce the intake of foods high in proteins.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis is test that evaluates a sample of your urine. It involves examining the appearance, concentration and content of urine. It can measure the protein in your urine, which is important in diagnosis of CKD.

The above are the main renal function tests for horseshoe kidney. Usually based on your individualized illness condition, other tests may also be ordered to assess your renal function.
