Hypertensive Nephropathy

Hypertensive Nephropathy basics

Hypertensive Nephropathy is a medical condition in which chronic high blood pressure causes kidney damages.

Cause

As the name suggests, hypertensive nephropathy is caused by high blood pressure. Why hypertension harms kidneys? Blood pressure means the force of blood against the walls of the blood vessels. Extra fluid in the body or the narrowed blood vessel will raise the blood pressure.

Chronic high blood pressure causes the heart working harder. Overtime, it damages the blood vessels throughout the body. Once the kidney blood capillary vessels are involved, kidney disease appears.

Types

There are 2 types of hypertensive nephropathy, namely benign nephrosclerosis and malignant nephrosclerosis. Benign nephrosclerosis is most present in people over 60 years old while the rare malignant nephrosclerosis occurs only in 1 to 5 percent of people with hypertension.

Malignant nephrosclerosis only occurs in a case of hypertension with diastolic blood pressure exceeding 130mm Hg. This is present in patients that already have an existing kidney disease that developed into malignant hypertension

Risk factors

Some factors increase the risk to develop the hypertensive nephropathy as follows.

- hypertension

- Diabetes mellitus

- people of color

- pre-existing hypertension

- pre-existing renal disease

- male gender

Prognosis

The prognosis is different between benign nephrosclerosis and malignant nephrosclerosis.

The former one rarely leads to Renal Failure. Patients who develop this condition will have decreased renal reserve and may not cope very well with acute illness and surgical procedures.

The latter one usually leads to a poor prognosis. According to a research, 75% of patients are able to survive more than 5 years from the onset of the disease.

Hypertensive nephropathy is preventable, just like most other diseases, if you manage healthy lifestyle and take right treatments.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has a more than 2500-year-history, which treats the symptoms and resulting medical problems caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain and other organs. TCM helps widen your blood vessels, so as to lower the blood pressure. Meantime, some herbs aim at repairing the damaged blood vessels and kidney tissues.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a systemic treatment which consists of several parts, that is, evaluating medical condition, cleaning out the toxins in the blood, blocking the kidney inflammation, improving kidney functions and rebuilding the immune system.

One thing should be pointed here is that more than 95% of kidney disease is associated with abnormal immune system. And so dose the hypertensive nephropathy. This is why immunotherapy is suggested for kidney disease patients.

Dialysis

Dialysis is suggested when hypertensive nephropathy develops kidney failure in which the kidneys cannot work properly to remove the toxins in the blood.

Dialysis works to filter the small sized toxins out of the blood. These waste products include BUN, serum creatinine, urea etc. If your condition is serious, only dialysis may be not enough. Hemoperfusion, hemofiltration and CRRT may be ordered.

Kidney Transplant

Kidney Transplant is a medical procedure which uses a donated kidney to replace the failed ones to improve kidney functions. Before and after the surgery, the blood pressure control will be a very important part. If it fails, hypertensive nephropathy may come back.
