Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder. It can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, and other organs. When kidneys are involved, it can cause lupus nephritis. Can SLE lead to end stage renal failure?
Lupus nephritis in SLE
Lupus nephritis is one of the most serious manifestations of SLE, usually arises within 5 years of diagnosis. In some cases, lupus nephritis can develop asymptomatically. The symptoms of lupus nephritis includes high blood pressure, proteinuria, swelling, etc.
Evaluating renal function in patient with SLE to detect any renal involvement early is important because earl detection and treatment can significantly improve renal outcome. Early inspection and treatment can stop renal function decline in Lupus Nephritis.
Can SLE lead to end stage renal failure?
If left untreated, renal function can deteriorate progressively. Eventually, end stage renal failure occurs. To prevent SLE lead to end stage renal disease, effective treatment should be adopted as early as possible.
The principle goal of therapy in lupus nephritis is to normalize renal function or, at least, to prevent the progressive loss of renal function.
Steroid therapy should be instituted if the patient has clinically significant renal disease. It can suppress the inflammation in kidneys, but long-term use of steroids can cause a myriad of side effects.
Treat high blood pressure aggressively. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors(ACEIs) and angiotensin receptor blockers( ARBs) are often used to treat high blood pressure and are also effective in treating proteinuria. Additionally, medicines are also used to treat hyperlipidemia.
However, the above treatment alone can not manage lupus nephritis completely. If the renal function decline progressively, eventually end stage renal failure occurs and dialysis or Kidney Transplant will be required.
To prevent lupus nephritis from developing into end stage renal failure, an alternative treatment is recommended.Immunotherapy is an alternative treatment for SLE patients with kidney damage. This therapy can stop the disease progression and improve renal function significantly. Thus, it can help the patients avoid developing Kidney Failure completely.
