Complications of Medullary Sponge Kidney

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2012-09-18 08:27

Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK) is a congenital disorder that can affect one or both kidneys, or only part of one kidney. There are cysts developing in the urine-collecting ducts and tubules. The exact cause of MSK is not known and there is no cure. Possible complications of this disease are introduced as below.

Approximately one person in every 10 with MSK has complications. Some of the complications associated with this disorder are:

▪ Renal calculi. Stones are usually small and can pass spontaneously.

▪ Calcium deposits in the kidneys

▪ Urinary tract infection and pyelonephritis

▪ Kidney infection

▪ Abscess (pocket of pus) within the kidney

Renal Failure. It can be caused by recurrence infection or obstruction due to calculi. Renal impairment can appear in 10% of patients.

▪ Wilms' tumour. Children with MSK have a greater risk of developing this complication.

▪ Distal renal tubular acidosis.

MSK usually causes no symptoms, and the condition often diagnosed by accident during medical investigations for other problems. Although considered benign the above complications may rarely lead to Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and even Renal Failure. So early treatment is necessary to reduce the complications.
