What are the Causes of Medullary Sponge Kidney

Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2012-10-31 19:36

Medullary Sponge Kidney (or MSK, sponge kidney) is a medical condition that present at birth and affects the tubules of the kidneys which are the tiny tubes that urine flows through as it is being formed. In general, the symptoms of Medullary Sponge Kidney often do not appear until middle age. Here, we will talk about the causes of this disorder.

Firstly, it is not clear of the initial cause of Medullary Sponge Kidney.

Though the disorder is a birth defect, no known specific gene or genes are related with this disease, and it does not appear to be predictably passed on from parents to children. This suggests the cause of the disorder may occur during the course of pregnancy, or may be a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Secondly, the cause of symptoms is well-known in any case. Healthy kidneys function to filter wastes out of the blood stream to produce urine. The urine is send to the bladder and passed out of the body. However, in patients with this disease, the inside of the tubules inside one or both kidneys start to fill with sponge-like cysts, or sacs. With the enlargement of these sacs, normal urine flow is blocked.

The most frequent symptoms in the early stage include urinary tract infections or kidney stones. Usually, both kidneys are affected, but some persons present symptoms in only one. Other problems caused by this disease are pain while passing urine, cloudy or bloody urine, pain of the abdomen, vomiting and fever.

People who suffer from the above symptoms persistently should seek medical attention. The diagnosis of Medullary Sponge Kidney can be confirmed through an X-ray with intravenous pyelogram (a dye infection given just prior to the scan). Treatment often focuses on alleviating complications such as recurrent urinary tract infections and kidney stones.
