Provided by Expert Zhang Youkang on 2012-10-24 13:14

Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK) Diagnosis: Ultrasound"I hear that Medullary Sponge Kidney is hard to diagnose...what tests are done to see if someone has MSK?" This may be a common question for some patients. In the following text, we will talk about the diagnosis of this disorder.

Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK)

This is a developmental abnormality occurring in the medullary pyramids of the kidneys. The condition is featured by cystic dilatation of the collecting tubules in one or more renal pyramids in one or both kidneys.

Individuals with MSK most commonly present with kidney stones, urinary tract infections, or blood in the urine. Among the stone formers, the disease appears to be more common in females and usually first presents in the 30s. Other presenting symptoms include flank pain, abdominal pain, etc.

Medullary Sponge Kidney diagnosis: Ultrasound

A kidney ultrasound is a noninvasive (the skin is not pierced) procedure used to assess the size, shape, and location of the kidneys. Ultrasound technology allows quick visualization of the kidneys and related structures from outside the body. Ultrasound may also be used to assess blood flow to the kidneys.

Ultrasound of the kidneys of patients with MSK typically demonstrates echogenic medullary pyramids. This appearance is found whether or not medullary nephrocalcinosis is also present.

Besides, in order to confirm the diagnosis of MSK, other imaging tests like IVU and CT scan are also needed. If you are suspected to have MSK, you should go for tests immediately. Anything unclear? Leave us a message or send an email to kidneyabc@hotmail.com.
