Nephrolithiasis in Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK)

2012-10-16 16:37

Nephrolithiasis is characterized by the formation of crystalline aggregates ("kidney stones") that can develop anywhere along the urinary tract. Kidney Stones are more common in Western societies. Here, we will talk about nephrolithiasis in Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK).

Medullary Sponge Kidney

MSK is a disorder characterized by tubular dilation of renal collecting ducts and cystic dilation of medullary pyramids. This disorder is considered a developmental anomaly. However, familial case with autosomal dominant inheritance has been reported. In unselected patients undergoing urography, the incidence of MSK is around 0.5%.

Nephrolithiasis in MSK

MSK is asyptomatic. The first signs that a person has the disease is usually a kidney stone or UTI. People with nephrolithiasis may cause symptoms:

▪ Burning or painful urination

▪ Pain in the back, lower abdomen, or groin

▪ Cloudy, dark, or bloody urine

▪ Foul-smelling urine

▪ Fever and chills

▪ Vomiting

People with these discomforts should see a doctor right away.

How is nephrolithiasis in MSK treated?

Treatment mainly focuses on removing any stones and preventing further stone formation.

Lithotripsy. This is a stone removal procedure. It uses sound waves to break stones into sand-like particles. Then the particles can pass through the urinary tract with the urinary flow.

Another way to remove stones is to insert a thin tube called a ureteroscope through the urethra and bladder to catch the stone and retrieve it.

In addition, through diet changes or taking medicine, patients can prevent more stones from forming. Drinking more fluid is also of great importance.

In China, we mainly adopt conservative therapies for nephrolithiasis in MSK, so patients suffer no pain or damage to other organs. For more information, leave a message in the below or Email to kidneyabc@hotmail.com.
