Renal Colic of Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK)Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK) is a rare congenital disorder where the tubes in the kidneys that collect urine are wider than normal. People with this disorder is often symptomatic. Although considered benign, patients may develop some associated complications of MSK. Here, we will talk about one of these complications: renal colic.

What is renal colic?

This is a common condition in which a person which experiences severe pain due to a kidney stone. We all know that people with MSK are at increased risk for kidney stones. One or more stones in one or both kidneys can result in renal colic. Typically, when a large kidney stone moves out of the kidney into the ureter, it causes this classic symptom.

Symptoms of renal colic

The hallmark symptoms are a severe sharp, stabbing pain in the flank area on the same side of the lower back as the location of the underlying kidney stone. Patients often suffer from waves of very intense pain that can be accompanied by sweating, pallor, nausea and vomiting. Episodes of this condition can last from hours to days.

With the moving down of kidney stone from the ureter toward the bladder, the renal colic pain of MSK may moves from the flank area to the lower abdominal area and into the groin. The pain may also radiate into the testicles of the labia. Generally, the problem resolves if the kidney stone is able to pass into the bladder.
