Causes and Symptoms of Medullary Sponge Kidney

2012-11-10 17:35

Medullary Sponge Kidney (MSK) is a congenital disorder where tiny sacs that appear to be sponge-like and are called cysts begin to develop in the urine-collecting ducts and tubules of one or both kidneys. This condition belongs to a group of diseases known as 'Cystic Kidney Disease'. This text mainly talk about the causes and symptoms of MSK.

Causes

The exact cause of MSK is not known and there is no cure. It is thought the condition may have a genetic link. People with this disorder may have cysts developing in the inner part of the kidney or medulla. These cysts restrict or prevent the flow of urine through the tubules and can blocking the urine causing urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and blood in the urine (hematuria), etc.

Symptoms

Though MSK is present from birth, symptoms typically do not usually occur until later in life. It is typically discovered when a urinary infection or a kidney stone has developed causing symptoms that lead a person to seek medical treatment. These symptoms may include as below:

● Pain in the back, lower abdomen or groin;

● Blood in the urine or hematuria;

● Urination that is frequent, painful or burning;

● Urine that has strong or foul smelling odor;

● Nausea or vomiting;

● Fever and body chills.

Treatment may not be necessary for many people living with MSK. In case of consistent appearance of conditions like kidney stones or UTIs, the main treatment methods may be to combat those issues singularly. The doctor will also be able to advise if any additional course of treatment will be needed. If there is still anything unclear about MSK, please leave a message in the below or send us an email. We will try our best to guide you to the best recovery!
