Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) is a disease that affects tiny blood vessels in kidneys. It can be attributable to a number of causes, such as autoimmune disorder, infection, hereditary disease etc. MPGN can be divided into three histologic types. What is MPGN type III prognosis?
MPGN type III is an immune complex disease with immune complexes in the subepithelial space. To eliminate these immune complexes from body, an inflammatory response is initiated in body. The abnormal immune system activity can cause progressive renal function decline.
If type III MPGN is associated with another condition or disease such as lupus, hepatitis, it usually can resolve if the associated condition or disease is controlled successfully.
If MPGN is idiopathic,it often has a worse prognosis.Approximately 50~60% of untreated patients will progress into end stage renal disease (ESRD) within 10~15 years, while 25-40% of untreated patients will continue to have normal renal function.Spontaneous remission or improvement occurs in less than 10% of cases.
The following factors can worsen the prognosis of type III MPGN significantly:
*Nephrotic Syndrome:a kidney disorder with heavy protein in urine
*High blood pressure: keeping blood pressure under 130/80mmHg can improve the prognosis
*Crescents on kidney biopsy
The above are the influencing factors of MPGN type III prognosis, but the treatment plays the key role.
Regular treatments of MPGN mainly include steroids and immunosuppressive drugs as well as some medicines to control symptoms. However, many patients still develop Kidney Failure with these treatments. To improve the prognosis of MPGN,immunotherapy is a recommended treatment. Firstly, it can suppress the abnormal immune system activity, thus blocking more immune damage to kidneys.Additionally,it can degrade the immune complexes in kidneys and make them out of body.Once the triggering factor of abnormal immune response is eliminated, the relapse of abnormal immune system activity will be inhibited completely. What’s more, it can stimulate the self-regeneration of impaired kidney tissues, thus improving renal function.
However, immunotherapy is not appropriate to all patients with MPGN. You can consult our medical profession to know if it is a right treatment choice for you.
