Biopsy is a diagnostic test for suspected kidney problem in which your doctor removes a small piece of your kidney tissue and observes it under a microscope. Sometimes, the diagnosis of Henoch Schönlein Purpura Nephritis needs this test, but not always.
Biopsy for HSP
If there is doubt about the cause of the skin lesions, a biopsy of the skin may be performed to distinguish the purpura from other diseases that cause it, such as vasculitis due to cryoglobulinemia; on microscopy the appearances are of a hypersensitivity vasculitis, and immunofluorescencedemonstrates IgA and C3 (a protein of the complement system) in the blood vessel wall. However, overall serum complement levels are normal.
Biopsy for HSPN
Kidney biopsy may be ordered both to establish the diagnosis and to assess the severity of already suspected HSPN. Usually the kidney biopsy may be suggested for any of the following conditions:
- Impaired kidney functions, which causes excessive waste products in the blood.
- Proteinuria, which is excessive protein in the urine
- Hematuria, which is blood in the urine
Is kidney biopsy a necessary for the diagnosis?
When your doctor cannot figure out the final diagnosis of HSPN or the severity of it, the kidney biopsy seems a must for suspected patients. However, kidney biopsy usually leads to various side effects, including bleeding, infection, pain, kidney function decline etc.
After years’ research, experts design a series special test for HSPN to replace the kidney biopsy, which improves patients’ life quality.
Special tests for HSPN
- Antigen Tests
- Ig tests
- Blood Urine Location Tests
- Complement Tests
- Lymphocyte Subpopulation Tests
- Toxins in Blood Tests
