Renal Amyloidosis

Renal Amyloidosis is a kidney disorder than is caused by Amyloidosis. The amyloidoses are a group of disorders in which soluble proteins aggregate and deposit extracellularly in tissues as insoluble fibrils, causing progressive organ dysfunction.

The kidney is one of the most frequent sites of amyloid deposition in AL, AA, and several of the hereditary amyloidoses. Amyloid fibril formation begins with the misfolding of an amyloidogenic precursor protein.

Renal Amyloidosis and multiple myeloma

Multiple myeloma and systemic Amyloidosis form part of a disease spectrum in which renal involvement is common. Renal Failure occurs in approximately 50% of patents with myeloma while in systemic Amyloidosis the Nephrotic Syndrome affect 40~50% of patients, and renal failure 25~50%.

Renal Failure also contributes to the cause of death in significant proportion of patients with both multiple myeloma and Amyloidosis.

How to deal with renal Amyloidosis?

Plasma exchange is usually suggested for patients with both renal Amyloidosis and multiple myeloma. Plasma exchange is common technique of blood purification. This machine helps remove the pathogenic antibodies from the blood and reduces the dirty factors building up in kidneys, alleviating kidney inflammation.

Chinese herbs. Chinese herbs seem a good choice for they help slow down the development and improve kidney function. Various herbs help improve the renal blood circulation, which supply the impaired kidney tissues with more blood and oxygen, promoting their self-cure and improve kidney functions.

Diet plan. Special diets are good for slowing down the disease progression. There are certain foods that they should avoid: Alcoholic beverages including sweet wine and coke; Vegetables that bear yellow flowers such as potatoes, balsam pear, towel gourd, cucumber, etc (watermelon and white gourd can not be eaten); Preserved egg and sulphurous drugs; Beef, mutton, vinegar, corn, sweet potato, bamboo shoot, chillies
